Pedestal: Five TimesFive Times In Which Zach Doesn't Get Hurt (And One Time He Does)

1. "Wait, you want me to what?" Zach asks, momentarily relaxing his grip on Ike. As a result, the shinx bounds forward and pounces on Kostya, eliciting a harsh, panicked cackle. "Stop it!" He dives back into the fray before Carlita offers her 'help'.

"Kickboxing," Nick replies with an easy grin.

"Kicking!" Carlita squeals. At least it distracts her from trying to punish Ike.

"I figure, you know, it wouldn't hurt to learn a little self-defense. You're kinda small and you tend to get hurt a lot."

Ike zaps him and he can feel his hairs stand on end. Something smells charred.

The view was lovely. The girl sighed and leaned her head against the window, watching as the world rushed by. It was so green, with so much open space, and the sky was so vivid. It was a beautiful shade of blue. She closed her eyes with a smile.

When she reopened them, the view outside the windows wasn't much more than a hazy bluish-gray. She sat up, puzzled, and looked over at her father—except he wasn't there. Where there should have been seats, there was only space. She found herself in a vast room, draped in rich shades of blue, and she was on the only seat. The blonde girl gave a start; she was not al

Ree didn't even bother looking away from the TV screen. "No. Why would we? Isn't that right Scottie?" She reached across and pinched him on the cheek until he screamed and slapped her hand away.

"You're just doing that to get in the lead. You're not going to emerge victorious that way!"

Ree rolled her eyes. "And that's where you're so wrong, Scottie. I'm gonna kick your ass and make you beg for forgiveness."

Maya didn't know what Scott leaned over and whispered in Ree's ear, but given the way her sister turned crimson, she didn't need to guess what he had said.
