"It's been one week since you looked at me
Threw your arms in the air and said you're crazy
Five days since you tackled me
I've still got the rug burns on both my knees..."
-One Week by Barenaked Ladies

They could've worked out.

If they weren't so serious about their careers.

If they weren't so stubborn.

If they weren't so high-strung or proud or competitive or arrogant or themselves.

But barring that, they could have worked out.

And for all of perhaps four (and a half) minutes, they did.

Nathan was slipping into hammered and Sara Grace was more than buzzed. It was their second year, or was it their third? Their older classmates had spiked the drinks but they had pretended not to care even though they were all very worried—until their collective inhibitions disappeared. Nathan smiled stupidly over the rim of his glass. She was pretty—okay, she was hot—and she wasn't another dumb girl. She was actually pretty good at a lot of things. She was competent, and he could respect that. A lot.

The short skirt and plunging neckline he could also respect.

"Graaaaaciiiiieeeee," Maria slurred, leaning heavily on the younger girl.

"It's Sara Grace, both words," the blonde replied primly.

"Your hair is... it's soooooo pretty," she continued as if she hadn't spoken. Maria ran her fingers through the ringlets appreciatively and put her head on her shoulder. "I wish I could have sunlight hair like you." She lapsed into drunken Lannish and slipped off her shoulder into her lap with a giggle.

"Think they're...?" Jack hissed into his ear, too loud and too unsubtle. Nathan shrugged. "You take Sara, I'll take Maria."

"What about Allen?"

"I think he's out for the night." They both looked at the blond ranch kid sprawled out on the couch, just feet away. He certainly didn't look like he'd be waking up anytime soon.

"Okay, deal."

Jack, with plenty of alcohol and a natural charm that Nathan didn't possess, invited both girls over and struck up a conversation about mutual friends (which also included alcohol; they were all pretty far gone by that point). They discussed training and the war and favorite drinks and how short a skirt ought to be in the military. They all agreed very happily that they ought to be shorter.

After the fact, if you asked each of them, the accounts of what had happened next varied wildly.

"Nathan came on to her too fast, of course. And Jack's just an asshole."

"She started it, not me. And Maria bit Jack."

"She was a little rough and too drunk, and Sara Grace was completely inviting trouble. She practically ate his face off."

"He tasted like cigarettes and slobbered all over me. He was horny and annoying as hell."

"I wasn't even smoking then and you didn't seem to mind at the time! Lying bitch."

"Oh yeah?! If you hadn't buried your face in my shirt, maybe I'd believe you!"

Ironically and mysteriously enough, Allen is the only one who knows the complete and (mostly) unbiased truth of what actually happened between the four of them. "Nathan and Sara Grace were making out and he slid his hand up her skirt. She couldn't get his belt off and got frustrated. Around that time, Maria threw up on Jack. He told her she had had too much to drink, so she responded by throwing the rest of his drink in his face. Sara Grace and Nathan ended up arguing about the other two so bad that it turned physical. Things were pretty much forever scarred between them when she kneed him in the stomach and he punched her in the jaw."

The other four still protest vehemently to this version and wonder where the hell he got his information.

Hahaha. This was fun and incredibly awkward to write. I still can't ever see Nathan and Sara Grace together. Ever. But realistically speaking, during training, they were both teenagers and horny. They probably had thoughts. And drunken incidents.
