"I dreamed I was missing
You were so scared
But no one would listen
Because no one else cared..."
-Leave Out All The Rest by Linkin Park

Nathan was strong. Except when he wasn't.

He prided himself on the fact that these moments were few and far between and he could usually keep them from other people. But eventually, he couldn't.

He was weakest in his sleeps, when his subconscious savagely ripped him apart for all of the things he could have done, should have done, didn't do. Twice he woke up with wet eyes, once sobbing dryly into his pillow. Sonya slept peacefully through these episodes. Until one time too many, he saw Sonya die in front of him, pulled limb from limb by a Prissy with golden hair and a flowing white dress and not a speck of blood on it even while she was pouring buckets as she bled out, screaming for him, brokenly and angrily and desperately and painfully and—

Nathan's eyes snapped open and he was singularly unsurprised to find the tears already running. He rolled over and buried his face in the pillow, biting the fabric to prevent himself from making any further sounds. He couldn't do this anymore. He couldn't face death constantly through two bodies. He couldn't be responsible for two lives.

He impulsively looked up to make sure Sonya was still with him.

It was a paranoia only Tego developed. When the nivedidus wasn't in its third stage, the Inven could die and the Tego wouldn't. She could die without him. They weren't connected and he wasn't entirely dependent on her—or was it the other way around? He couldn't ever keep it straight.

Nathan rolled out of bed with a nearly silent thump and creeped over to her bed, kneeling beside it. He reached out and brushed some of her hair out of the way, running his fingertips across her forehead. Making sure she was still there. What would he do without her? What would she do without him? She didn't have a family to return to. She couldn't hold most other jobs. She was too young to marry. She was his responsibility; every facet of her life was his to protect and guide. He was never so aware of it as during the sleepless nights when he watched over her.

Nathan leaned against the edge of her bed and fell back asleep like that, his fingers tangled in the ends of her hair. He awoke again to her pressing her lips against the corner of his eye. "You were crying. You taste like salt."

"It's better than cigarettes." He couldn't handle this. But he would. For her.

What the hell, dA. My comments get deleted half the time.

Anyways. Have I ever said I love your characters and their self-destructive tendencies? BECAUSE I DO.
